The Tom Roten Morning Show...Mornings from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., on News Radio 800 WVHU/1600 WZZW.
We learned this morning that the Cincinnati Reds fired manager Dusty Baker after the Reds were once again quickly bounced out of the playoffs. The Reds lost 6-2 on Tuesday to the Pirates in game that Reds players didn't even seem like they wanted to be in. It was the 6th straight loss for the Reds to end the season.
Dusty is a great guy, a good baseball man. He's been very successful as a manager for three teams (Giants & Cubs also). He took the Reds to the postseason 3 out of the last 4 years. But he was not a motivator.
Some may say that players who are being paid millions of dollars like Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto shouldn't need motivating, but they do!
The Reds seemed to have no life in them the last week of the season! They came home for a series with the lowly Mets and lost 2 of 3. They still had a chance to host the Wildcard game by taking 2 of 3 at home vs. Pittsburgh, but the were swept!
It's as if the team just gave up! (See Ken Rosenthal's column: Reds stopped playing for Baker)
They have NO heart! They needed a leader to kick them in the rear every now and then. They needed to feel the heat. But Dusty repeatedly said he didn't want his guys to feel pressure!
Well now we see that method didn't work...not with this team!
I hope Dusty lands with another team, if that's what he wants. And I hope he continues his success. Now let's speculate who will replace him in Cincy????
Have ideas? Share 'em with me on the show next week!
Here's an interesting take on Dusty's firing:
