The Tom Roten Morning Show...Mornings from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., on News Radio 800 WVHU/1600 WZZW.
After thinking about our government mess this week, here are some of my random thoughts...
Pres. Obama, Rep. Capito, and others have made mention that Social Security checks may not go out IF the debt limit is not raised.
First off, the SS trust fund should never have been robbed by both Republicans & Democrats...the promise was made and now will not be kept. The budget should have nothing to do with Social Security. This very fact illustrates perfectly the fact that we can't trust the Federal Gov't. to do anything they say. Nearly everything they do could be done cheaper and more efficiently without them.
So if the President doesn't allow the checks to go out, that will be something he does on purpose to make things, once again, as painful as possible (just as he's done for the WW II Vets at their memorial in DC).
Some may suggest that if the checks don't go out that it will hurt many including my 87-year-old father.
Whether or not my Dad, me, my wife, my sons, or anyone else benefits from the Gov't. (taxpayers) does not change the fact that it's wrong. How can anyone who believes in the Constitution defend these gov't. programs? How can anyone who believes the Bible defend these gov't. programs? If a man won't work, neither shall he eat. See 2 Thessalonians 3:10 for more.
Charity in the Bible is love in action. It isn't love to take from one person who works and give it to someone else who won't (even if they can't).
And by the way, people have paid into the SS system and should get it. However, we would've been better off if we just took our own money and saved or invested the way we wanted rather than the gov't. do it for us.
You see, I have a different view - a view that says let the American people decide what's best for themselves rather than the gov't. I think you, me, and just about everyone else are smarter than Capito, Obama, Rahall, Manchin...all of 'em!
I don't mean that politicians aren't intelligent, actually they know exactly what they're doing. And it's all on purpose! I just mean that the average citizen is perfectly capable of making decisions for themselves better than the politician (we're smarter than them when it comes to our own lives).
Some say big business is out for themselves and we need government to control them.
A capitalist society is a corrupt society, no doubt. And certainly profit has been put ahead of safety many times. Is water cleaner now in some areas? Sure! Great! But the "good" that the gov't. does will never out-weigh the bad, the corrupt, the greed.
I'm not a Libertarian, but I do agree with a lot of what they stand for. But we need limited government. God set up gov't. and laws and for our protection we need enforcement of laws. But whether it's gun bans or coal plant bans the gov't. goes too far. Arrest the bad guys in both cases, but don't punish the law abiding citizen!
Every crisis, natural disaster, extreme hot/cold, mass shooting, etc. should not require new regulation, new laws, or new entitlements...all of which are brought about by those eager to not let an opportunity pass by to grow gov't. bigger than ever. And of course they are pushed by an eager, no-information sect of society. Sometimes things happen, things go wrong, peole get hurt, people die, property is destroyed...some intentional, some by neglect, some natural. If we'd just deal with individual cases and duly punish those that did wrong, then we wouldn't have half of the non-sense we have now that limits our freedom and taxes us into oblivion, and leaves us with a national debt of $17 Trillion.
Instead, everytime little Johnny does something wrong, the entire class is punished!
