The Tom Roten Morning Show...Mornings from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., on News Radio 800 WVHU/1600 WZZW.
Over the last few days on the show, we've discussed the horrific results of what bullying can lead to. Bullying when I was in school resulted in kids getting called names, made fun of, and yes, me getting cup cakes smeared on my glasses!
Apparently things have changed. Today the bullying doesn't stop when the victim gets off the school bus. It continues on social media! What I've asked (and really haven't gotten an answer) is WHY do parents allow their pre-teens and teens to have unsupervised access to facebook, twitter, email, and other social media?
A 12-year-old girl in Florida committed suicide after being bullied on social media.
And a 12-year-old boy in Nevada kills a teacher before killing himself, students say he was bullied at school. But according to reports (see below), this boy had just seen an anti-bullying video!
An anti-bullying video allegedly shown to the 12-year-old shooter at Sparks Middle School is being suggested as the inspiration behind his deadly shooting spree.
Amaya Newton, an eighth grader at the Nevada school, says the boy was often mistreated by fellow students and that the video showing a bullied girl retaliating with a gun in the days before may have "gotten into his head."
Amaya claims the anti-bullying video was shown to students on Oct. 11th. That would be the last school day before the students were given a week off for fall break, before returning to school on Monday.
There must be something to this! It doesn't seem these anti-bullying efforts are working. In fact, it seems they're having the opposite effect. In another recent, unrelated case...
The father of 15-year-old Jordan Lewis, who committed suicide in Illinois last week, has accused an anti-bullying video shown at his school of motivating his sucide as well.

Whatever the reasons and whatever the solutions, bullying is real! And parents need to take responsibility! Shouldn't parents be paying more attention to their kid's social media exploits?
One parent is trying to bring charges of bullying against an entire football team!
After his kid’s high school football team loses 91-0, dad files BULLYING complaint
A father in Texas has filed a formal complaint charging the coaches at Aledo High School with bullying after the Aledo High Bearcats beat the tar out of the Cougars of Western Hills High School by a score of 91-0 on Friday night.
I've seen interviews with the coach of the winning team. Every effort was made to not run up the score...running clock, starters removed early, etc.
Now as a coach of youth sports, I can honestly say that I would not want to be on either end of a 91-0 score. But was this bullying? Absolutely not!
Sometimes kids just need to learn how to lose! That may be why we have a generation of "Occupy Wall Street" folks. They're always used to getting their way...you know, EVERYBODY gets a trophy!
To equate losing a football game to what these bullied kids have gone through is absolute stupidity! It degrades the true and real impact of REAL bullying.
